NEMC Announces New Programming for Summer 2021
NEMC is thrilled to announce several new and exciting programs for Summer 2021! We are extremely excited with these changes for next year and believe this will allow us to offer both our successful and traditional camp program, while also introducing some additions to our summer camps. NEMC will now offer one four-week NEMC core camp program, followed by four, two-week intensive camp programs designed to meet the changing and increasing needs of students in certain areas of specialty: The Chamber Music Intensive, Jazz Intensive, Musical Theater College Prep Intensive, and the Prelude String Orchestra Camp
We believe we are now in position to offer an appropriate program for every young and aspiring musician who is also searching for a warm, supportive, and appropriately challenging environment. We hope you will join us in some capacity during the summer of 2021, as well celebrate an amazing 85 years of beautiful music making and life-long friendships on the shores of Messalonskee.
NEMC Core Program (June 27 - July 26)
NEMC is returning to our traditional four week program! We all wished a session at NEMC could last just a little bit longer, so we are doing just that with one four week program to start our summer programming. The same structure of morning lessons, classes, and rehearsals, afternoon recreations, and evening social activities will still be in place, but with the addition of NEMC classic activities like Song Comp, Musical Theater Night, and an additional Honor Recital! Get ready for the best four weeks of summer!
Intensives (July 26 - August 9)
Chamber Music Intensive
NEMC’s Chamber Music Intensive is a two-week workshop for advanced high school musicians interested in full immersion into the world of chamber music. Program participants will focus on two to three works from the chamber music literature, alongside a faculty representing organizations such as Orpheus Chamber Orchestra, The Portland Piano Trio, The New Jersey Chamber Music Society, The Borealis Wind Quintet, Los Angeles Chamber Orchestra, Festival Orford Musique, Midwest Mozart Festival, US Marine Band Chamber Orchestra, Sequitur, VentiCordi, and The Harlem Chamber Players. Admission is based solely on auditions due March 15, with participants announced April 1.
Jazz Intensive
The Jazz Intensive at NEMC is a two-week immersion program into the world of both traditional and contemporary jazz. From jazz theory, to small ensemble work, onto big band sounds, this program will be limited to 30 advanced students. The daily schedule includes a variety of classes, private lessons specifically for jazz, and rehearsals within the multiple groups. Admission is audition-based due March 15, with participants announced April 1.
Musical Theater College Prep Intensive
NEMC is thrilled to announce the Musical Theater College Prep Intensive. Open to high school students entering their sophomore, junior, or senior year, this two-week program is designed to prepare participants for applicant auditions into university musical theatre programs. Campers will follow a rigorous course schedule of song and monologue coaching, private voice lessons, dance, and acting. Additionally, students entering their senior year will have the option to film their required audition media on site, meeting all requirements of the Musical Theater Common Prescreen (MTCP). The program will culminate in a showcase of work for parents and friends. The MT College Prep Intensive is led by Stephen Agosto, Senior Manager of Artistic Engagement at the Tony-Award winning Paper Mill Playhouse, who drafted the nationally recognized MTCP criteria in 2018.
Prelude String Orchestra Camp
NEMC Prelude String Orchestra Camp is a one or two week camp that welcomes upper elementary and middle school string players, ages 9-13, to an orchestra ensemble experience. Designed for string players new to ensemble playing, this camp will bring fun and excitement to playing in a group! Each morning, campers will rehearse in a large orchestra ensemble,as well participate in small group lessons and classes to enhance their string playing skills. In the afternoons and evenings, campers will participate in traditional camp activities to enjoy the lake-front campus of NEMC. Each week culminates with a final concert performance at the Bowl in the Pines. *Day student option available!
Students may enroll in a diverse six week program by applying for both NEMC’s core program and one of the Intensives. Please note that the Intensives are a separate audition and the selection process will be more rigorous. All participants for Intensives will be announced on April 1, while NEMC core program will continue with rolling admission throughout the year.
